First round of online FYJC admissions concludes today

The first round of online junior college admissions will wind up on Saturday. It is the last day for students to confirm their admission at colleges where they have been allotted a seat. By Fridayevening,66,958 students from all boards had secured admission through the online process.

Most colleges have finished confirming the admission of a majority of students allotted seats (online) in the first round. Several seats will go vacant because students who have already secured admission offline will not bother to confirm another seat online, said a senior education department official. More than 84,000studentshave already secured their seats through offline admissions this year.

The first merit list was announced on July 27 and close to 1.64 lakh students were allotted seats. However, only 66,958 admissions have been confirmed.
This means there will be more seats available in the second roundof admissions, said the principal of a south Mumbai college.

A large chunk of students will avail of the betterment option on the second list, which will give them a chance to bag a seat in a college of their choice.

By Saturday evening, colleges will have to surrender their vacant seats, which will then be used for the second round of admissions. The second merit list will be announced on July 4.

Fewer 90% scores led to fall in cut-offs

Mumbai: Explaining the fall in cut-offs for junior college seats this year,Tushar Desai, principal of D G Ruparel College, said, Most who apply for junior college seats are from the state board. Since the 90 percenters had gone down, cut-offs had to go down. Most principals echoed Desai on low scores of SSC students being the reason for fall in cut-offs.

At many top city colleges, after minority and in-house admissions, very few seats are left for open category students.Principal of SIES College of Commerce Minu Thomas said,Our cut-off in commerce has dipped from 90.77% to 89.63%.There was a slight increase in seats,that is why more students were accommodated, bringing down the cut-off marginally. The college converted management quota seats to merit seats to take in more in the open category.Despite having 480 seats,135 were for online admissions.

At H R College in Churchgate, the cut-off was 91.27%,which is similar to last years,but the college was surprised by the high percentages of students who got seats under the sports and cultural quota.The highest percentage under the cultural and sports quota stood at 91%.Even under the physically challenged quota,the highest scorer was 89%, college principal Indu Shahani said.Shobhana Vasudevan,principal of R A Podar College, said,If results were bad and cut-offs higher,it would have led to frustration. 

Fr Frazer Mascarenhas,principal of St Xaviers College, said, With more high scorers aiming for bifocal seats, there will be many cancellations. We hope to finish the process soon.
Meanwhile, the high court on Wednesday dismissed a petition filed by a student to challenge the new changes effective this academic year in Mumbai colleges for the online admissions to the bifocal branch of science in junior colleges.

First merit list for online jr college admissions today


Mumbai: With the first general merit list for online junior college admissions to be announced today, anxiety levels of students are reaching new heights.Just as students are clueless about what to expect from the list, college heads are confused. However, they all agreed that cut-offs may not be higher than last year.
Cut-offs will change from college to college, depending on choices made by students. There may be a slight drop or no difference in cutoffs, but definitely cut-offs will not be higher than last year, said Vijay Joshi,principal,K J Somaiya College,Vidyavihar.

Unlike last year, where the number of 90% and above scorers in all boards SSC,ICSE and CBSEhad shot up,this year SSC results saw a 50% dip in the number of students scoring 90% and above. Principals told TOI that even though more ICSE and CBSE students have got through the 90% mark,they are a very small number in junior college aspirants. Of the 1.92 lakh applications that have come up online, less than 10,000 have come from other boards.State board students have nothing to worry about, added Joshi.
Principals agreed that students should expect the first cutoff to be on the higher side. There may be an increase in cut-offs for the commerce stream but definitely other streams will see a dip, said Marie Fernandes, principal, St Andrews College, Bandra (W).She added that even though the cutoff in the first list may be high, it will definitely come down in the second and third lists. The first merit list always shows a drastic picture but cutoffs come down in the next two lists, she added.

Most principals refused to predict cut-offs but were sure they will come down.Kavita Rege, principal, Sathaye College,Vile Parle (E),said, Even though we cant be sure,I have a feeling cutoffs may come down slightly. 

The first online merit list will be announced today at 5 pm. Students whose names have appeared in the first list will receive a message. In any case, students can check if their name has been announced in the first list by logging on to fyjc.org.in, said a senior education official.

Students whose names have appeared on the list can confirm their admission by submitting the required documents and paying Rs 50 to the college over the next two days.

Pune schools fare better than division

Most of 35 Subject Awards Bagged By Solapur, Ahmednagar Students; City Student Tops In English In Night School Category

Pune: Secondary schools in the city and neighboring Pimpri Chinchwad have collectively registered an overall success rate of 87.17% in the secondary school certificate (SSC, Std X) exam 2012. The result is 2% better than the 85.12 pass percentage by Pune division, which covers Pune, Solapur and Ahmednagar district.
    

While Pune city's overall success (fresh and repeater candidates) is 86.54%, the same for Pimpri Chinchwad is 88.83%. Together, they account for 501 of the total 1,299 secondary schools that participated in the SSC March 2012 examination from Pune district.
    

The online SSC results were declared by the Maharashtra state board for secondary and higher secondary education on June 13 but, the mark sheets were issued to individual students on Friday.The Pune divisional board released details of how the secondary schools under the three districts as well as the talukas performed in the exam.
    

Pune division,which was first among the then eight divisional boards in the state last year, came second after the newly established Konkan division this year.Of the total 57,823 students appeared from 501 secondary schools in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, 50,401 students have been declared passed. This works out to an overall success of 87.17%.
    

Pune city, which has been divided in two segments i.e. west and east, had total 359 secondary schools participating in the exam. A total of 20,422 students appeared from the 160 secondary schools in Pune city-west segment and 17,943 of them were declared passed. Similarly, 21,800 students appeared from the 199 secondary schools in Pune city-east segment and 18,600 students were declared passed. Together, Pune city accounted for 42,222 appeared students and 36,543 cleared the exam for a pass percentage of 86.54 for the city.
    

In Pimpri Chinchwad, 15,601 students appeared from 142 secondary schools and 13,858 cleared the exam for an overall success of 88.83% for the twin-industrial township.
    

As many as 129 schools in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad finished with 100% result i.e. all students appearing from these schools have cleared the exam. Of these, 86 schools are in Pune city and another 43 in Pimpri Chinchwad.
    

Pune division was second only to Mumbai in terms of the number of schools with 100% result across the state. While Mumbai division had 682 such schools, Pune division had 639 schools of which 332 are in Pune district and another 142 and 165 in Ahmednagar and Solapur districts, respectively. Pune district also had five schools which recorded zero per cent result.
   

In all, 1,134 out of the 1,299 secondary schools in Pune district finished with a result in excess of 80%. In Pune city most prominent schools performed exceedingly well with their results in the 90%-plus slot. This has been due to the high-scoring performance by students.

WHAT AILS CIS A major problem with the CIS is that the student, who takes the CIS option has to forego an entire year of studies. Apart from going through the SSC studies all over again, there is no guarantee that the student will score better than his/her first exam score

Eligibility for Admission:

(i) Nativity: Applicant should be an Indian Citizen.

(ii) Academic Qualifications:

a) Candidate seeking admission to the Course should be a Graduate in any faculty of any University in Kerala or of any other Universities recognised by any of the Universities in Kerala as equivalent thereto.

b) He/she should have passed the Bachelor’s Degree Examination with a minimum of 45% marks in aggregate (ie., 45% marks for all the parts of the Degree Examination taken together). However candidates belonging to SC/ST category need only 40% marks in the qualifying examination.

c) Candidates who are appearing /have appeared for the qualifying examination (regular examination of academic year 2011-12) are also eligible to apply for the Entrance Examination. Such candidates become eligible for admission only if they produce the Provisional/Degree Certificate and mark lists of all parts of the qualifying examination at the time of admission.

(iii) Age: There is no upper or lower age limit.

(iv) Qualifying Standards in the Entrance Examination: To qualify in the rank list for admission to Three Year LL.B Course, a General/SEBC applicant should get a minimum of 10% of total marks in the Entrance Examination and a candidate belonging to SC/ST category should get a minimum of 5% of total marks out of 600 in the Entrance Examination.

Entrance Examination: The Entrance Examination will be conducted at Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Kozhikode on 22.07.2012 (Sunday) from 10.00 AM to 1.00 PM. It will be of 3 hours duration and will consist of 200 Multiple Choice Questions. The Questions will cover General Knowledge, English and Aptitude for Legal Studies.

How and When to Apply:
Candidates seeking admission to the Course can apply online on the website www.cee.kerala.gov.in of the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations. The website will be opened for online registration from 20.06.2012 to 02.07.2012, 5 p.m.

5. Application Fee: For General and SEBC candidates, the application fee is Rs.600/- (Rupees Six Hundred Only) and for SC/ST Candidates, the application fee is Rs.300/- (Rupees Three Hundred Only).The required fee can be remitted at any branch of the State Bank of Travancore using the Bank Chalan which is available in the online application print out. The Original Chalan duly signed and authenticated by the bank authorities should be attached along with the print out of the application form. Candidates outside Kerala State can remit the application fee by attaching a Demand Draft for the requisite amount drawn on a Nationalised Bank in favour of the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations, payable at Thiruvananthapuram.

6. Last date and time for receipt of print out of application: Candidates should take printout of the online application and affix a self attested passport size photograph, identical to the one which has been uploaded, in the space provided. This application along with the required documents should be forwarded to the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations, Housing Board Buildings, 5th Floor, Santhinagar, Thiruvananthapuram – 695 001, either by registered post or by hand delivery so as to reach the office before 5 pm on 03.07.2012. Delhi University admissions: Cutoffs touch new heights | Stephen's, maximum for English, Economics

The first college cutoffs for this year are in, and they're bad news for most admission seekers. St Stephen's College on Wednesday announced a 98% cutoff for commerce stream aspirants to the BA English (honours) course. That's also the highest among all cutoffs for the college this year, followed by 97.75% for economics.

Barring Sanskrit, the cutoffs have been increased for all other undergraduate courses in the college, with each of them touching a new high this year. The biggest jump has been for philosophy (honours), where the cutoff for science students has been hiked to 91% from 84% in 2011. For humanities students, it has been raised to 89.5% from 83% in 2011.

While BA English (honours) recorded the highest cutoff, ranging from 95.25% to 98%, the economics (honours) cutoffs ranged from 96.75% to 97.75%. Humanities students too will face far higher cutoffs this year, ranging from 0.75 to 6.5 percentage points. The only course to have not hiked its cutoff is Sanskrit (honours), which retained last year's cutoff of 65%.

"Commerce students tend to score high, but even humanities students are scoring pretty high marks which has been reflected in the cutoff this year. While going through the application on a random basis, we found a large number of students scoring 97% or 98% in humanities," said the tutor of admissions, K M Mathew.

There is no relief in the science courses either. Barring a marginal increase in physics (honours),the rest of them have seen hikes of 1 to 3 percentage points, with BSc (honours) in mathematics recording a cutoff of 96.25%.

There are a total of 420 seats for which the college has received over 22,000 applications - 15,000 online applications and 7,000 physical applications. The highlight of the pre-admission registration process this year has been the significant increase in the number of applicants scoring 97% and above in their best of four subjects (including one language).

Based on the cutoffs the college will shortlist students for the next phase of the admission process, the interview. The names of the shortlisted candidates will be announced on Friday afternoon.

According to the 2012-13 admission policy, the college will not give weightage to Class X scores. Otherwise, the college is going to continue with most of the reforms introduced in 2010-11, including that of keeping the merit differential between any reserved and general category at a maximum of 15%.

Final admissions will be based on the interview which has been given 15% weightage and Class XII marks, which have 85% weightage.

Mumbai FYJC Minority Cut off 2012 | FYJC Cutoff for Minorities 2012

Following an almost 50% dip in the number of state board students who scored more than 90% in SSC this year, cut-offs for minority quota at junior colleges, too, are lower than in 2011.In other words, getting admission to a college of choice would be easier this year.

At Jai Hind College, Churchgate, cut-off for Arts under the Sindhi minority quota fell from 64.8% to 60% and the Commerce cut-off from 75% to 70% in their first, offline merit list. The Science cut-off stood at 75%.At St Xaviers College, the cut-off for minority quota applicants in the Arts stream fell from 79.6% last year to 77.4% whereas the Science cut-off fell from 86.6% last year to 84.2% this year.

However, cut-offs at a few other minority institutes remained at last years levels. The rest of the minority institutes will announce their first offline merit list on Tuesday. Marie Fernandes, principal of St Andrews College, Bandra, was unable to divulge the actual cut-offs for FYJC as their first list will be announced on Tuesday.

First list cut-offs are always high since students apply to various colleges but end up confirming admissions at only one college. Cutoffs will surely dip by the second list, she said and added that online admissions and merit lists might follow a similar trend.
At H R College, students under the minority quota who had scored above 80% were given walk-in admissions and the first merit list was announced on Monday.

Our cut-off this year is 78%,which is almost the same as in 2011.Since we had walk-in admissions till Saturday, most of the 85% and above scorers have already confirmed their seats with us, said Indu Shahani, principal of the college.

Shahani added that almost a fourth of the candidates who confirmed their seats with the college have scored more than 90 %

No Separate Admission Process For Autonomous Colleges This Year


The process for online submission of admission forms for the centralised admissions to the firstyear engineering and technology degree courses in the state will begin from June 20.
The directorate of technical education (DTE) has issued a notification declaring the schedule for submission of forms,document verification and confirmation for the admission process.
Students aspiring to join the engineering courses are required to access the official website to fill up the form online and take a print-out of the same for submission in person at the designated application receipt centres (ARCs).Confirmation of form submission at the ARC is mandatory.

The DTE has declared a total of 2,80,042 students,who appeared for the Maharashtra Health and Technology Common Entrance Test (MHT-CET ),as eligible for admissions this year.
There are a total of 1,33,904 seats at 348 engineering colleges in the state.This includes 5,412 seats at 16 aided colleges while the remaining seats are in the 342 unaided engineering colleges.

It is unlikely that all the 2.80 lakh students will vie for the engineering seats,since a number of them opt for other professional courses,like medical and pharmacy,besides institutions outside the state,like the IITs,NITs and BITS,Pilani,among others.The DTE has been reporting vacancies in excess of 10,000 seats at the end of the admission process for the last few years.
Meanwhile,there will be no separate admission process for the autonomous engineering colleges this year.Each applicant stands an equal chance of seeking a seat at these coveted colleges along with the non-autonomous college seats.The admissions will be conducted under the overall supervision of the DTE.

The College of Engineering,Pune;Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute,Mumbai;Sri Guru Gobind Sinhji Institute of Engineering and Technology,Nanded;Walchand College of Engineering,Sangli and Sardar Patel College of Engineering,Andheri,are the five premier autonomous colleges.

This year,a couple of more autonomous colleges have started in Nagpur and one more in Aurangabad and Amravati, said Anil Sahasrabudhe,director of CoEP.
There will be three rounds of CAP while two of these rounds will be allotment through submission of online option forms and the third round will be conducted by way of counseling only for Maharashtra state candidates.

Sahasrabudhe said, Candidates will be free to choose any combination of colleges, autonomous or non-autonomous, in Round-I.If the candidate gets one of the first three choice of colleges, he/she will have to take that college,but if he/she gets any college between the 4th and 44th option, then he/she will have the option to leave it and continue with the Round-II allotments.

There is a seat for every student 

Educationists Allay Fears As FYJC Seats Rise To 2.7L

Online junior college admissions have already begun and, once again, the anxiety levels of students have reached new heights. To top it, fewer high scorers and the once praised Best-5 policy did little to boost the results of state board students.

Colleges and education officials, though, told TOI on Thursday that the students fears are completely misplaced, considering that more than 2.7 lakh junior college seats are up for admissions this time round. Every year, students worry they will not make it through to a college at all and once the admission process is over, thousands of seats go vacant. We have more seats than last year, so students have nothing to worry, said a senior official from the deputy director of education (schools) office. Last year, close to 1.3 lakh seats were left vacant after online admissions got over some in top rung institutes.

With admissions to bifocal courses being pushed offline after the online admissions, students have got more online seats this year. Students will definitely get through to a college of their choice, provided they apply to colleges according to their percentage. Problem arises when students tend to be overambitious and apply to colleges with high cut-offs and then blame this on the faulty system, added the official. This year, even though theres been a marginal increase in the number of junior college seats, those for online admissions have increased.

The first merit list always looks very unrealistic, especially because toppers apply to all top colleges, said Marie Fernandes, principal of St Andrews College in Bandra West. She added that every year, most colleges face a dearth of students applying for Arts. Students fail to understand that they can get a headway when it comes to self-financed courses during degree admissions. All courses have seats reserved for students from all three streams.
Some colleges reduced their seats in the management quota and converted them into open category seats. This gives more opportunity in the general category, said a principal.
